Founded in the 16th century by Polish Glagolitic priests, it served as a hermitage for three centuries. Glagolitic priests and their students, mostly from Poljica but also from other regions, lived here. The site was damaged during World War II when German forces built bunkers, but the dedicated efforts of the islanders restored the sanctuary.
